Success of economic sanctions threats: coercion, information and commitment

This study examines when and why threats of economic sanctions lead to the successful extraction policy concessions. Scholars identified three (not mutually exclusive) hypotheses that explain success sanction threats: (a) coercive, (b) informational (c) public commitment hypothesis. The underpinning mechanisms for are, respectively, cost sanctions, uncertainty about resolve sender domestic audience issuing empty threats. In this study, we offer an empirical test on effectiveness. addition, assess how variation in affects effectiveness relative imposed sanctions. For expected cost, use TIES data. To measure uncertainty, generate a network diplomatic relations, based Formal Alliance data, utilizing methods from complex theory. commitment, democracy score POLITY IV Our results show strongly increases target; however, become increasingly effective lower higher cost.
